SICILY. Syracuse. Timoleon and the Third Democracy, 344-317 BC. Stater (Silver, 23 mm, 8.41 g, 2 h). Pegasos flying to left. Rev. ΣYPAKOΣIΩN Head of Athena to right, wearing Corinthian helmet. Calciati 1. HGC 2, 1400. A lovely toned coin, toned and clear. Overstruck, with visible traces of the undertype's mill sail reverse still visible on the reverse, otherwise, very fine.



The Greek politician and army commander Timoleon was sent from Corinth with an army to help the colony of Syracuse. He made a name for himself by defeating Hiketas of Leontinoi and the Carthaginians, thus playing an important role in the history of Sicily and especially of Syracuse.
