SICILY. Syracuse. Timoleon and the Third Democracy, 344-317 BC. Stater (Silver, 23 mm, 8.41 g, 2 h). Pegasos flying to left. Rev. ΣYPAKOΣIΩN Head of Athena to right, wearing Corinthian helmet. Calciati 1. HGC 2, 1400. A lovely toned coin, toned and clear. Overstruck, with visible traces of the undertype's mill sail reverse still visible on the reverse, otherwise, very fine.



The Greek politician and army commander Timoleon was sent from Corinth with an army to help the colony of Syracuse. He made a name for himself by defeating Hiketas of Leontinoi and the Carthaginians, thus playing an important role in the history of Sicily and especially of Syracuse.

Obol (Bronze, 26 mm, 16.67 g, 12 h), in the style of contemporary standard Ptolemaic coinage from Alexandreia, Syracuse, c. 264-263. Laureate head of Zeus right. Rev. ΒΑΣΙΛΕΩΣ ΠΤΟΛΕΜΑΙΟΥ Eagle, with spread wings, standing left on thunderbolt; in field to left, oval shield decorated with thunderbolt; the whole within dotted circle. Lorber 288 (but same obverse die as 289). SNG Copenhagen 114. Svoronos 610, pl xii 17. Wolf & Lorber, 'Idealized Alexandrian style', 610. Fine dark green patina. Very fine.
