Basileios Hypatos, 11th century. Seal or Bulla (Lead, 31 mm, 24.90 g, 12 h), Overstruck on a seal of a certain Nikolaos. O B/A-C/H/Λ Facing, nimbate and draped bust of St. Basil, holding Book of Gospels. Rev. + AΓIE BOHΘHTO CO ΔOYΛO BACHΛHO YΠATO [...] In six lines, with the lower part of the inscription missing due to the overstrike. Zacos I -. Zacos II -. Cheynet -. A fine seal with attractive surfaces and showing interesting undertype. Very fine.

Someone might wonder, HOW??? How did Basileios actually re-put the string into this seal and reuse it to send a scroll. We all know that a seal is created by two flans merged together with the help of a Bouloterion and to remove the string is almost impossible. So what actually happened her? Maybe the Basileios (who apparently didn't know very good Greek) just returned the message to Nikolaos using the same Seal, string, and possibly parchment.
