BYZANTINE SEALS, Provincial Administration. Basil Apocapes, Nobelissimos and Dux of Edessa, 1077-1084. Seal (Lead, 21 mm, 11.22 g, 11 h). [O /B]A/C - I/ΛE/I St. Basil of Caesarea, nimbate, facing, holding Book of Gospels in his left hand and raising his right hand in benediction. Rev. [..B]ACIΛΕΙ[Ω]/NΩBEΛΛI/CIMΩ S ΔOY/KI EΔECIS/ TΩ AΠOK/OΠ[O] in six lines. Zacos -. Cheynet Instanbul - (cf. 8.25). Struck on a tight flan, otherwise, good very fine.



Cf. Jordanov, Corpus II 40 for a seal of Apocapes before 1064 when he was serving in the Paradounabian region. Basil served in the Balkans from 1059 to 1065. After the defeat of Romanus Diogenes in 1071 he served under the Armenian general Philaretus Brachamios as a Dux of the city of Edessa from 1077 until his death in 1083.
