LUCANIA. Metapontum. Circa 400-340 BC. Didrachm or nomos (Silver, 20.5 mm, 7.77 g, 7 h). ΛEYKIΠΠOΣ Bearded head of Leukippos to right, wearing Corinthian helmet; large barley grain behind head. Rev. ΜΕΤΑ /API Barley ear with leaf to left; above leaf, poppy-seed pod. HN III 1552. Johnston Class A 3.1 (same dies). An extremely rare variation with only one example known to Johnston, currently in BNF in Paris; another was sold in New York Sale XI (2006), 13 = NAC O (2004), 1113; this is the third known example. Very fine.
