ISLAMIC, Ottoman Empire. Selim III, AH 1203-1222 / AD 1789-1807. Weight of 10 dirhems (Bronze, 21x21x9mm, 31.74 g), an octangular commercial-weight. Tuğra of Selim III, dated 1203. Rev. Plain. Kürkman cf. 200 and 207 (20 and 50 dirhems) and p. 87, bottom right. Dark grey-green patina. About very fine.

From the Eparch Collection.

Selim III was highly cultured and interested in reform, which, of course, put him in direct conflict with the conservative elements of the Ottoman state. In 1807 he was dethroned and deposed by the Janissaries who placed his cousin Mustafa IV on the throne in his stead.
