SICILY, Syracuse. Hieron II, 275-215 BC. Hemistater or Drachm (Gold, 13mm, 4.28 g 12), c. 217-215. Head of Persephone to left, wearing grain ear wreath and pendant earring; behind head, uncertain symbol. Rev. ΙΕΡΩΝΟΣ Charioteer driving biga galloping to left; no symbol below. Cf. BMC 511 ff. Cf. Gulbenkian 348. Pozzi 653 (this coin). A rare variety. Nicely struck and of good style. Uncleaned; with a minor fault on the first horse’s side, otherwise, about extremely fine.
