Maurice Tiberius, 582-602. (Lead, 17 mm, 3.52 g, 7 h), Decanummium, Italian mint. Crowned and cuirassed bust of Maurice Tiberius facing, flanked by two crosses. Rev. Large I between two crosses; all within wreath. C. Morrisson, "Monnaies en plomb byzantines", RIN LXXXIII (1981), 13. Very rare emergency issue, copying issues of Ravenna, SB 472. Possibly the best example available. Good very fine.

From a Basel collector formed before 1990.

The metal of this coin is definitely not pure lead. It does not have the correct feeling on the hand as pure lead objects do. It is probably made from pewter, an alloy of lead with tin. In any case this is an extremely important and interesting example, possibly the best available in the market.
