Lot 355

KINGS OF COMMAGENE. Antiochos IV Epiphanes (?), 38-72 AD. (Bronze, 12 mm, 2.15 g, 2 h). Flying centaur springing to left, drawing bow. Rev. Capricorn to right. Unpublished. Cf. Naumann 58, 116. Extremely rare and possibly the third example known. Very fine.

Although unpublished and without any inscription stating the minting authority, this type was attributed to an uncertain mint in Asia Minor. The similarities of the reverse with the Capricorn on the coins of Antiochos IV and particularly the RPC 3862 can be an indication of the issuing authority. Still this attribution is far from concrete and is just a suggestion from the depths of our Hellenic sophistry.
