Saitta. Crispina, wife of Commodus. 178-c. 191. 8 Assaria (Bronze, 41mm, 50.58 g 6), under the magistracy of Octavius Artemidorus, c. 175-180. ΚΡΙCΠΙΝΑ CΕΒΑCΤΗ Diademed and draped bust of Crispina to right, her hair bound into a bun at the back. Rev. ΕΠΙ ΟΚΤ ΑΡΤΕΜΙΔΟΡΟΥ ΑΡΧ Α / CΑΙΤΤΗΝΩΝ On the left, Mên standing right, wearing a Phrygian cap and hunting dress, with a crescent moon on his shoulders, holding a long spear in his left hand and offering poppies with his right to the turreted figure of Kybele, seated facing him on the right, extending her right hand and resting her left on a cymbal. Cf. Winterthur 3888 for the same magistrate on a coin of Commodus, otherwise unpublished save for its previous appearance at auction. Extremely rare, apparently unique. An extremely impressive coin with a fine, dark green and red patina. Extremely fine.

ΑΥ ΚΑΙ Λ CΕ CΕΟVΗΡΟC ΟVΛΙΑ ΔΟΜΝ/Α On the left, laureate and draped bust of Septimius Severus to right, facing, on the right, draped bust of Julia Domna to left; below, between the busts, shallow countermark bearing ΘΕΟΥ. Rev. ΕΠΙ ΠΡΥ ΛΕΟΝΤΟC ΤΟΥ ΑΛΚΑΙΟΥ / ΣΤΡΑΤΟΝΕΙΚ/ΕΩΝ Zeus Panamaros, wearing hunting dress with cloak and holding a long spear, on horse walking to right; to right, lit altar. SNG Copenhagen 503. SNG von Aulock 2669 (same dies). Sharp and pleasing with a dark gray-green patina. Minor areas of flatness, otherwise, about extremely fine.

Mysia. Pergamon. Caracalla, 198-217. 8 Assaria (Bronze, 43 mm, 46.14 g, 4 h), under the magistracy of M. Kairellius Attalos, 214. ΑΥΤΚΡΑΤ Κ ΜΑΡΚΟC ΑΥΡ ΑΝΤΩΝΕΙΝΟC Laureate bust of Caracalla to right, wearing cuirass ornamented with the head of Medusa. Rev. ΕΠΙ CΤΡ Μ ΚΑΙΡΕΛ ΑΤΤΑΛΟΥ / ΠΕΡΓΑΜΗΝΩΝ ΠΡΩΤΩΝ Γ ΝΕΩΚΟΡΩΝ On the right, temple of Asklepios to left, with the god seated left within the central intercolumniation; before it to left, ax-wielding priest about to sacrifice a humped bull, standing left before Caracalla standing right, togate and pouring a libation over the bull’s head. BMC 324. SNG Paris 2230 (same dies). Very rare. An impressive ‘medallion’ with a fine brownish-red patina. Some smoothing in the fields, otherwise. Extremely fine.

Pergamon. Caracalla. 198-217. 8 Assaria (Orichalcum, 43mm, 43.10 g 6), under the magistracy of Julius Anthimos, 214. ΑΥΤΚΡΑΤ Κ ΜΑΡΚΟC ΑΥΡ ΑΝΤΩΝΕΙΝΟC Laureate bust of Caracalla to right, wearing cuirass ornamented with the head of Medusa (from the same die as the last). Rev. ΕΠΙ CΤΡ ΙΟΥΛ ΑΝΘΙΜΟΥ ΠΕΡΓΑ / ΜΗΝΩΝ - ΠΡΩΤΩΝ ΤΡΙC / ΝΕΩΚΟΡΩ / Ν On the right, Zeus, draped to the waist, seated left on throne, holding spear in his left hand and, in his right, a figure of Nike standing to left and crowning Caracalla, standing left in military dress, holding a long staff in his left hand and a phiale in his right. SNG Copenhagen -. SNG Paris -. SNG von Aulock -. Extremely rare and apparently unpublished save for its previous auction appearances. An impressive coin with an attractive, very dark green patina. Fields very slightly smoothed, otherwise, extremely fine.

ΑΝΕΜΟΥΡΙΕΩΝ ΕΤ Β Artemis standing facing, her head turned to right, holding bow in her left hand and drawing arrow from her quiver with her right; below to left, stag standing left, looking back. ΑΥΤ Κ Μ ΑΝΤ ΓΟΡΔΙΑΝΟC CΕΒ / Π - Π Radiate, draped and cuirassed bust of Gordian III to right, holding spear and with shield over his left shoulder. Rev. ΤΑΡCΟΥ ΜΗΤΡΟΠΟ / ΑΜ / Κ / Β-Γ Gordian galloping on horseback to right, striking at a lion running below, is head turned back to left. BMC 285. SNG Paris 1722. SNG von Aulock 6040. Rare. Greenish brown patina. Some surface smoothing in fields, otherwise, good very fine.
