BAKTRIA, Pre-Seleukid Era. Sophytes, circa 305-294 BC. Drachm (Silver, 16 mm, 3.54 g, 6 h), uncertain mint in the Oxus Region. Male head to right, wearing a crested Attic helmet decorated with a laurel wreath on the bowl and a wing on the cheek guard. Rev. ΣΩΦΥΤΟΥ Rooster standing to right; in field to left, kerykeion. Cf. Bopearachchi, Sophytes 3 (hemidrachm). HGC 12, 14. SNG ANS 21-4. Attractive and well-struck on good metal. Some slight traces of corrosion and with the obverse struck slightly off-center, otherwise, extremely fine.

Diademed and draped bust of Eukratides to right, wearing Macedonian helmet adorned with bull's horn and ear. Rev. ΒΑΣΙΛΕΩΣ ΜΕΓΑΛΟΥ / ΕΥΚΡΑΤΙΔΟΥ The Dioskouri galloping to right, each holding a couched spear in his right hand and a palm branch in his left; below left, monogram of ΗΡΛ. Bopearachchi Series 6Z. HGC 12, 131. Mitchiner 177l. SNG ANS 473 var (position of monogram). Lightly toned and unusually well-struck; undoubtedly one of the finest known. Minor marks, otherwise, virtually as struck.

HΛIOKΛEOYΣ / KAI ΛAOΔIKHΣ Conjoined draped busts to right of Heliokles, bareheaded, and Laodike, wearing tainia; in field to left, monogram; all within a fillet border. Bopearachchi 13A. HGC 12, 133. SNG ANS -. Well-centered and nicely toned, with fine portraits. A few light scratches and minor porosity, otherwise, good very fine.

Bopearachchi 3B. HGC 12, 218. SNG ANS 968-72. Attractively and evenly toned; a very pleasant example. Virtually as struck.
