nomos 20

Zunfthaus zur Saffran, Zurich
Welcome, finally!, to Nomos 20. At the time of this was first written, in early March 2020, we were coming to the realisation that our auction was not going to take place on the 3rd of May: we never thought it would have to be put off to 10th of July!
Lot 397
Western Mediterranean / North African Area. Circa 4th-6th Centuries. (Bronze, 24x24x4 mm, 25.53 g), a thick, square weight with a flat top and bottom and a plain edge (as MAH B1), ounce of 25,53 g and solidus of 4.255 g. ― I / SOL / - Ϛ -, inlaid with silver. Rev. Plain. Cf. Bendall 156-157 and Nomos 13, 2016, 314 (3 Ounces or 18 Solidi). Very rare. Some marks and incrustations, and with some missing inlay, otherwise, very fine.
Hammer Price: 200 CHF

Lot 399
Western Mediterranean / North African Area. Circa 4th-6th century. Solidus weight (?) or dedicatory plaquette (Bronze, inlaid with silver, 15x15x2 mm, 4.06 g), square, with a flat top and bottom, and a plain edge (as MAH B1). +SER / GIVS, inlaid in silver; between lines, horizontal band inlaid in copper. Rev. Christogram between Α and ω; above, incuse band, originally inlaid in another metal. Possibly unpublished. There are 6th century Byzantine seals known bearing the name Sergius in two-line form (as Dumbarton Oaks BZS.1958.106.4707 – a bilingual Greco-Latin example), but they are only peripherally relevant to this piece. Whether this piece can be best described as a plaquette or a weight is unclear. The fact that other similar square pieces are all around the same weight makes it probable that they were, in fact, thought of as solidus weights, albeit light ones. Brown and red patina. About very fine.
Hammer Price: 1300 CHF
Estimate: 250 CHF
