BYZANTINE SEALS. Theodoros, Imperial kandidatos & Droungarios of Syke in Cilicia, circa 9th century. Seal or Bulla (Lead, 25 mm, 18.99 g, 12 h). Cruciform invocative monogram formed by the letters of the legend ΘΕΟΤΟKΕ BOHΘEI; in the fields, TΩ - CΩ / ΔΟY-ΛΩ . Rev. ΘΕΟΔΩ/ΡΩ ΒS ΚΑΝ/ΔΙΔ S B'Δ/PΟΓΓΑΡIΩ/ CY[KHC] in five lines. A possibly unpublished seal, with another example, from the same bulloterion recently offered in Themis 9 (2021), 673 which completes the inscription of the present example. Syke could refer to the castle of Syke on the coast of Cilicia which has been under siege by the Arabs in 771 according to Theophanes. Very rare, with only two examples known. Very fine.

Cruciform invocative monogram reading: Κύριε βοήθει τῷ/σῷ - δού/λῳ (Lord aid your servant). Rev. +CTE/ΦΑΝΩ BA/CIΛΙK' CΠA/ΘAPΙΩ in four lines. Stylistic similarities with BZS.1947.2.675. Good metal. Some cleaning marks, otherwise, very fine.

KE BOHΘH TΩ CΩ ΔOYΛΩ around patriarchal cross set on base and two steps. Rev. +ΛEON/TI B'KANΔ/HΔAT' S KOY/PATOP' in five lines within linear border. Very similar in style and titles to a seal of a certain Maekes, BZS.1958.106.2161. Well-struck and clear. Good very fine.

Seal or Bulla (Lead, 27 mm, 14.50 g, 12 h). +KE BOHΘEI TΩ CΩ ΔOYΛΩ Patriarchal cross set on base and three steps from which tendrils grow towards each side. Rev. +CTEΦ/ΑΝΩ B'CΠA/Θ' S XAPTOY/Λ ΤΩ NOY/MEPΩN in five lines within circular dotted border. Seemingly unpublished. The title of Chartoularios of the Numeroi is extremely rare to appear in seals. Very fine.

Rev. +ΓPHΓΟ/PIΩ B'OCT/IAP, S EΠΙ TIC/ ΛYKIAKIC/ TPAΠEZ in five lines flanked by sets of dots. The whole within simple linear border. A fine seal. Very fine.

Rev. + /ΠΕΤΡΩ/ Α'CΠΑΘΑP'/ S ANOTAP,/ T, ΘPAK' in five lines within plain dotted border. Possibly unpublished except for the prior auction appearances of this example. Extremely interesting and rare iconography for the Apostle Peter. Nearly very fine.

The whole within plain dotted border. Unpublished in the standard references. An interesting seal of a imperial court officer who was in charge of the stables. Nearly very fine.

Rev. +CΩNSTANT AYTOKRA[T RM] Bust of Constantine IX facing, wearing jewelled crown with pendilia and jewelled loros, holding staff surmounted by cross in his right hand, and globus cruciger in his left. DO Seals 6, no. 73. Zacos I, 79 (but from different bulloterion from the published examples). Nicely and deeply toned. Rough areas on both sides, otherwise, good very fine.

Same boulloterion as Hirsch 267 (2010) 880 (realised 420€). Of excellent engraving skill; an elegant and charming seal of a high officer of the theme of the Aegean sea. Very fine.
