Anastasius I, 491-518. Solidus (Gold, 21 mm, 4.49 g, 6 h), Constantinople, 8th officina, 492-507. D N ANASTA-SIVS P P AVC Helmeted and cuirassed bust of Anastasius facing, his head turned slightly to right, wearing cross diadem, holding a spear with his right hand and a shield, ornamented with a horseman, over his left shoulder. Rev. VICTORI A AVCCC H / CONOB Victory standing left, holding long cross; behind her, eight-pointed star. DOC 4. MIBE 4. SB 3. Unusual with the cross diadem on the obverse. Clear, sharp, and well-struck. Extremely fine.

Period of Anastasius I - Justinian I, circa 498-565. Pentanummium (Billon, 12 mm, 1.87 g, 3 h), Constantinople?. Diademed and draped bust of emperor to right; in field to right, cross; around, border of large pellets. Rev. Large cursive E with cross to right; all within border of large pellets. DOC -. MIB -. Sb-, apparently unpublished. Extremely rare. Attractively toned and struck in high relief. Slightly rough surfaces, otherwise, extremely fine.

Justinian II, first reign, 685-695. (Billon, 10 mm, 0.52 g, 1 h), struck on flans made by cutting sheet metal rather than by casting or overstriking earlier coins, Rome. Facing bust of Justinian II. Rev. XXX; below, in exergue, ROm. DOC 69. MIB 77. SB 1309. Very rare and unusual. Rough green patina as found. Nearly extremely fine.

Irene, 797-802. Solidus (Gold, 20 mm, 3.89 g, 6 h), Syracuse, c. 797/8. IRIEN AΓOVST Bust of Irene facing, wearing chlamys and crown with pendilia and a cross on a semicircle between two pinnacles, holding an akakia in her left hand; behind her shoulders, the two curved lines of a throne-back. Rev. AΓOVSTI Bust of Irene facing, wearing loros and crown with pendilia and a cross on a triangle between two pinnacles, holding a cross potent on base in her right hand. Anastasi 452. DOC 3. SB 1601. Spahr 340. Extremely rare, beautifully struck on a very broad flan with all details clearly on the coin. Good extremely fine.

EIRIh bASILISSII Crowned bust of Irene facing, wearing loros and holding a globus cruciger in her right hand and a cross-tipped scepter in her left. Rev. EIRIh bASILI Crowned bust of Irene facing, wearing loros and holding a globus cruciger in her right hand and a cross-tipped scepter in her left; in field to left, C; in field to right, I. Anastasi 455 var. (no pellet on the obverse). Cf. DOC 4 = SB 1602 var. (no letters in the reverse fields). Extremely rare. Sharply struck on a full flan, a splendid piece. Good extremely fine.

Extremely rare, sharp and struck on a full flan: an exceptionally fine example. Very minor die rust and marks, otherwise, good extremely fine.

N-I-FoRos bA Bearded, facing bust of Nicephorus I, wearing crown with a cross on circlet, chlamys, and holding a cross potent in his right hand and an anexikakia in his left. Rev. ST'A Is Δ Beardless, facing bust of Stauracius, wearing crown with a cross on circlet, chlamys, and holding a globus cruciger in his right hand and an anexikakia in his left. Anastasi 468 var. (inscription). DOC -. SB 1608 var. (Nicephoros wearing a loros). Same dies as Roma e-sale 6 (2014), 475. Extremely rare, sharp and well centered on a broad flan. Virtually as struck.
