Very rare - Potitus Valerius Messalla, consul suffectus in 29 BC
PHRYGIA, Aizanis. Augustus, 27 BC - AD 14. Assarion (Bronze, 22mm, 8.36 g 2), Potitus Valerius Messalla, consul suffectus in 29 BC, proconsul of Asia, c. 28-c. 23/20 and legatus pro praetore of Syria, c. 19-18, c. 25 BC. ΠΟΤΙΤ ΜΕΣΣΑΛΛΑΣ Bare head of Potitus Messalla to left; behind head, grain ear (?). Rev. ΕΖΕΑΝΙΤΩΝ Hand holding balance to left; to right, monogram. RPC 3067. SNG von Aulock 3342. Very rare and very clear. Dark olive-green patina. Two ancient cuts on the reverse, otherwise , good fine.

Apparently unpublished and seemingly completely unknown depiction of Homer
Paphlagonia, Amastris. Marcus Aurelius, 161-180. Diassarion (Orichalcum, 27mm, 15.23 g 6). ΑΥΤ Κ Μ ΑΥΡΗΛΙΟC ΑΝΤΩΝΕΙΝΟC Laureate, draped and cuirassed bust of Marcus Aurelius to left. Rev. ΑΜΑCΤΡΙΑΝΩΝ / ΟΜΗΡΟC The poet Homer seated to right on a low-backed chair, his head turned back to left; before him to right, Artemis holding torch, her head turned to left; to left, Ares (?), standing left, his head turned back to right. Apparently unpublished and seemingly completely unknown. A coin of the highest possible interest, with a fine obverse portrait and a fascinating representation of Homer on the reverse. Golden-brown patina. Good very fine.

ΚΑΔΟ-ΗΝΩΝ Kybele, turreted and draped, seated to left on bench-like throne; to left, lion. BMC -. SNG Copenhagen -. SNG von Aulock -. Possibly unpublished. Well struck and well centered, and with a very dark olive-black patina. Extremely fine.

ΑΥΤ Κ Μ ΑΝΤ ΓΟΡΔΙΑΝΟC Laureate, draped and cuirassed bust of Gordian III to right, seen from behind. Rev. ΕΠΙ ΔΗΜΟΝΕΙΚΟΥ / ΜΑΓΝΗΤΩΝ Selene in biga of bulls rushing to left. RPC 532. Schultz 432. A bold piece with a green patina. Struck on a very broad flan with dies that are clearly considerably smaller. Good very fine.
