MACEDON, Dikaia. c. 500-465 BC. Obol (Silver, 13mm, 0.65 g 7). Bull’s head facing Rev. Octopus with tentacles downwards. Cf. BCD Euboia 324 ff. SNG Copenhagen 473 (both Eretria). Very rare. Well struck and much better than most known examples. Somewhat rough surfaces, otherwise, good very fine.

From the Höher collection.

This coin would normally be ascribed to Eretria but there is no trace of an identifying Ε on either side; thus, it seems likely that this piece was struck in Macedonian Dikaia (not the better known city in Thrace), which copied the issues of Eretria in the early 5th century BC
