SIKYONIA, Sikyon. Circa 360s-340s/330s. Obol (Silver, 0.59 g 9). Dove alighting right. Rev. Dove flying right, above tail, Σ. BCD -. BMC-.. Extremely rare and, perhaps, unpublished. A lovely coin, beautifully struck and well centered. Virtually as struck.

From a European collection, acquired before 2009.

The obols of Sikyon were struck in very large numbers. They were very popular and not only circulated throughout the Peloponnesos, but as well in Central Greece where the Aeginetic standard was also used. Thus, the vast majority of known Sikyonian obols are in worn condition. Pieces like this one are exceptional, even more so since it is a variant not found in the BCD Collection!
