ISLANDS OFF IONIA, Samos. Circa 600-525 BC. Hemihekte or 1/12 Stater (Electrum, 7.5 mm, 1.46 g). Three-sided square with central projection, surrounded by radiate lines. Rev. Rough incuse square. BMFA 1779 = Warren 1708 (some obverse die). HGC 6, 1172. Konuk, Electrum, Type 6. Rosen 363 (same obverse die and reverse punch). Very rare. Curiously attractive. Good very fine.

The earliest coins are famous for their enigmatic designs. Are they just irregular patterns used prevent forgery before the introduction of real figural types, or do they actually mean something, albeit in some stylised way? For example, if we wanted to be fanciful could what we see here be intended to be some sort of radiate standard, or even a harbour??
