GERMANY. Cologne. Thomas Graf von Rieneck, Vicedeacon of the Cathedral Chapter, 1471/1472-1547. Medal (Bronze, 54 mm, 32.29 g, 12 h), on his twenty-fifth anniversary as a member of the Cathedral Chapter; an original cast by F. Hagenauer, 1536. *VENERABILES.AC GENEROSI DN:THOMAE EX COMITIB A RENECK.MOGVNTINEN.CVSTOS:COLONIEN:SVBDECANVS.ET ARGENTINEN.ECLESIAR.DECANVS Beardless bust of von Rieneck to left, wearing berretto, simple robes and crucifix on a chain. Rev. ANNO SALVTIS / M.D.XXXVI. Inscription above shield bearing the the Rieneck arms. Cf. Habich I, 612 var. Weiler 65. Very rare. Very attractively toned - a very sharp original cast. Some minor casting faults and numerous pellets in the inscription, otherwise, otherwise, extremely fine.

From the Aviz Collection, ex Peus 387, 26 April 2006, 3341 and Hess Divo 295, 7 May 2003, 35.

Thomas von Rieneck was, from 1513, archbishop of Magdeburg and administrator of Halberstadt, as well as being a cardinal from 1518 and deacon of Strassburg. There is a contemporary portrait of him in the museum at Cologne. The titles used on Hagenauer’s first version of this medal were insufficient, since they lacked a number of his offices, and they were redone shortly thereafter.
