ISLANDS OFF CARIA, Rhodos. Rhodes. Circa 88/42 BC-AD 14. (Silver, 8.19 g), Lot of two silver drachms struck from the same obverse die, in the names of the magistrates Meikion and Euphranor (19 mm, 4.16 g, 8; 19 mm, 4.03 g, 1). Radiate head of Helios facing, turned slightly to the right. Rev. Ρ - MEIKIΩN -Ο and Ρ / Ο - ΕΥΦΡΑΝΩΡ Rose seen from above; to left, winged kerykeion. Meikion: Ashton & Weiss 295 (A98/P287, magistrate's name misread); Euphranor: Ashton & Weiss 297-8 var (A98/-, the obverse die was previously only recorded for Meikion, while the reverse die is new). Sharp, well-struck and attractive. A fascinating pair of coins, struck under two different magistrates but linked by their obverse dies and mint master's symbol. Virtually as struck.
