PERSIA, Achaemenid Empire. Time of Artaxerxes III to Darios III, Circa 350-333 BC. (Bronze, 13 mm, 2.39 g). Persian king, wearing kidaris and kandys, running-kneeling right, holding spear in right hand, bow in left; in left field, letter; to right, countermark of seven-rayed star within incuse circle. Rev. Incuse rectangle, containing pattern possibly depicting relief map of the hinterland of Ephesos. BMC 7. Johnston, Earliest, Æ 1-4; Mildenberg, Münzwesen pp. 25-6 and pl. XIII, 112. Attractive black patina with earthen highlights. Reverse struck slightly off center, otherwise, very fine.
