Leo VI the Wise, 886-912. Solidus (Gold, 19 mm, 4.31 g, 7 h), ca. 900-912. +MARIA+ Veiled bust of the Virgin facing, orans, wearing tunic and maphorion; to left and right, ΜΗR and Θu. Rev. LEOn En Χ.ω bASILEu S ROmωn Elaborate facing bust of Leo VI with long beard, and wearing a crown with a cross composed of four pellets, and a chlamys with tablion; holding globe surmounted by a patriarchal cross in his right hand. DOC 1a. S 1723. Extremely rare. An attractive and clear example. Some minor marks and edge bangs, otherwise. Nearly extremely fine.
