Philippopolis, Thrace. Septimius Severus, 193-211. Tetrassarion (Bronze, 28mm, 17.12 g 12), c. 208 (?). ΑΥ Κ Λ CΕΠ CΕΥΗΡΟC Π Laureate and cuirassed bust of Septimius Severus to right, wearing cuirass with aegis. Rev. ΜΗΤΡΟ ΦΙΛΙΠΠΟΠΟΛΕΩC Demeter standing facing, her head to left, holding phiale in her right hand and long staff entwined with a serpent in her left; to left, at her feet, snake appearing from a cista. Cf. Varbanov 1229/1276. With an attractive, glossy, dark green patina. Nearly extremely fine.


Do note the close parallels between the obverse portraits on this coin, and that on the tetradrachm in the previous lot.
