PERSIA, Achaemenid Empire. Time of Xerxes II to Artaxerxes II. Circa 420-375 BC. Daric (Gold, 13x14mm, 8.38 g). Persian king moving to right, in the running-kneeling position, with quiver over his shoulder and holding transverse spear ending in a ball in his right hand and bow in his left. Rev. Oblong incuse. BMC Arabia pl. XXV, 12. Carradice Type IIIb C, pl. XIV, 42. Well centered. Good very fine.


From a northern European collection, ex Gorny & Mosch Giessener Münzhandlung 207, 15 October 2012, 445.

There are a number of pellets visible in the reverse incuse, and there is at least one area that was reworked after the die was made. These may well be secret marks used to differentiate between different issues and are known from some other published examples.
