The coinage of Naxos was the most important of all the islands of the Cyclades, and testifies to the island’s great wealth. The type alludes to the importance of the wine industry to the island’s economy. The Persian sack of 490 put an end to the archaic coinage as well as destroying much of the island’s prosperity.
