THESSALY, Larissa. Circa 420-400 BC. Obol (Silver, 12mm, 0.96 g 9). Horse walking to right. Rev. ΛΑΡ - ΙΣΑ The nymph Larissa standing facing, her head turned to left, holding ball in her right hand and resting her left on her waist. BCD II, 168 and BMFA 881 (same dies). Very rare. With a reverse beautifully engraved and very well centered. Rough surfaces, otherwise, about extremely fine.

From a European collection, formed before 2005.

The delicacy and beauty of the figure of Larissa on the reverse of this obol must have been done by a master engraver of great talent. This may well be the best preserved example of the type known.
