THRACE, Maroneia. Circa 189/8-49/5 BC. Tetradrachm (Silver, 17.03 g 11). Head of youthful Dionysos to right, wearing ivy wreath. Rev. ΔΙΟΝΥΣΟΥ / ΣΩΤΗΡΟΣ / ΜΑΡΩΝΙΤΩΝ Dionysos, nude but for chlamys draped over his left arm, standing left, holding two narthex wands in his left hand and bunch of grapes with his right; to left, monogram of ΝΑΥ; to right, monogram of ΑΥΚ. Dewing 1296. Schönert-Geiss 1145-1176. A beautifully toned example, well struck on a broad flan. Traces of overstriking on the reverse, otherwise, extremely fine.

From a German private collection.

This coin is overstruck on what appears to be a late Hellenistic tetradrachm in the name of Lysimachos (some letters of basileus can be seen to the right of Dionysos on the reverse, as can the remains of a seated Athena). Exactly which issue it is has yet to be determined.
