Maurice Tiberius. 582-602. Solidus (Gold, 4.49 g 7), Constantinople, eighth officina (H). dN mAVRC TIb PP AVI Draped and cuirassed bust of Maurice facing, wearing diademed and plumed helmet and holding globus cruciger in his right hand. Rev. VICTORIA AVCC H / CONOB Angel standing facing, holding globus cruciger in his left hand and long, christogram-topped cross in his right. DOC 5 (h). MIB 6. SB 478. Lustrous and perfectly centered. Virtually as struck.

From a European collection, formed before 2005.

This coin is commonly ascribed to the main imperial mint of Constantinople, but the erudite cataloguer of CNG 88 (2011) lot 1562 has attributed another solidus, from officina Ε but struck from the same obverse die, to Thessalonica. This seems somewhat unlikely, but it is certainly worthy of further research.
