Julia Maesa was the older sister of the empress Julia Domna. After Caracalla’s murder and her sister’s suicide, Maesa became the head of the family and managed to engineer Macrinus’ overthrown and the accession of her older grandson Elagabalus. When he proved too irrational, Maesa managed to promote her other grandson. Alexander Severus, to the position of Caesar and then encouraged the Praetorians to murder Elagabalus and his mother Soaemias. She lived on well into Alexander’s reign and was deified after her death in 226.
