Head of Athena to right, wearing triple-crested Corinthian helmet adorned with serpent on the bowl, pendant earring and pearl necklace. Rev. ΒΑΣΙΛΕΩΣ ΑΛΕΞΑΝΔΡΟΥ Nike standing left with her wings spread, holding laurel wreath in her right hand and stylis in her left; to right, monogram within wreath; to left, ΜΙ. Hoover, HGC 9, 3a. Gold coins in the name of Alexander III were struck for a considerable period after his death: they were the preferred form of payment for soldiers and others who trusted the coins because their types and inscriptions were unchanging. This piece was struck early in the reign of Seleukos I and is an especially attractive example.
