Lot 128

LESBOS, Mytilene. Circa 454-428/7 BC. Hekte (Electrum, 2.53 g 3), c. 450/440 BC. Head of Silenos to right, bald and wearing a diadem. Rev. Two opposed ram’s heads with a palemette between them; all within a shallow incuse square. BMC 40. Bodenstedt 37 (d/δ). SNG von Aulock 1700. An attractive, lightly toned piece. Nearly extremely fine.

From the Spina Collection, ex Triton XI, 8 January 2008, 226.

Once again, a Greek die cutter who had been asked to provide dies for two succeeding issues used variants of the same portrait to distinguish them. In the previous lot we have a nearly fully facing head of Silenos, on this piece we see him in profile.
