MYSIA, Kyzikos. 5th-4th century BC. Stater (Electrum, 15.95 g), c. 350 BC. Dionysos, nude and holding a thyrsos, reclining left on the back of a panther prancing to left; below his feet, tunny fish swimming to left. Rev. Quadripartite incuse square. BMFA 1568. Jameson 2571. von Fritze -. Very rare. With a lovely patina; an elegant coin of fine style. Slightly weakly struck and very slightly off center, otherwise, nearly extremely fine.

From the Spina Collection, ex Vinchon 7 October 2003, 38.

The depiction of a youthful Dionysos riding a panther is probably best known from the late Hellenistic mosaic that that was found in the House of the Masks on Delos (c. 120-80 BC), but the scene on this coin is actually almost exactly the same as that on the more mannered and restrained mosaic from the House of Dionysos in Pella, which probably was made slightly after this coin was struck.
