Lot 119

MYSIA, Kyzikos. 5th-4th century BC. Stater (Electrum, 16.10 g), c. 380 BC. Head of youthful Pan to right, wearing an ivy wreath and with a goat’s ear; below truncation, tunny fish to right. Rev. Quadripartite incuse square. Jameson 1418a. SNG Paris 331. Von Fritze 192. Very rare. A splendid, toned example, perfectly centered and well-struck in high relief. Almost imperceptible old scratch on the obverse, otherwise, extremely fine.

From the Spina Collection, ex Vinchon 7 October 2003, 35.

This magnificent stater forms a pair with the previous lot, which bears the noble head of the mature Pan, no longer the young god of the woods as he appears here. Pantikapaion also produced coins bearing young and old versions of their patron god, and it would be interesting if the issues from Kyzikos served as the prototypes. In any case, this is probably the finest known example of the type. It should be noted that the head on this coin has been previously identified as being that of a Satyr (von Fritze, SNG Paris) and a young Dionysos (Jameson), but the tendency for Kyzikene magistrates to commission related types makes the choice of a young and an old Pan for use in consecutive years most appealing.
