MESSENIA, Korone. Circa 100-50 BC. Hemidrachm (Silver, 2.46 g 12), year Ζ = 7. Head of Athena wearing Corinthian helmet to right. Rev. Κ-ΟΡ / Ζ Bunch of grapes within ivy wreath. BCD Peloponnesos 785 (this coin). BMC 3. Grandjean pl. XXVI, 5. SNG Lockett 2484 (same obverse die). Rare and very nicely toned. About extremely fine.

From the Spina Collection and from the BCD Collection, LHS 96, 8 May 2006, 785 and ex Münzen und Medaillen 68, 15 April 1986, 255.

Why Korone should have produced a series of silver hemidrachms during the 1st century is unknown. Of particular interest is the fact that the issues seem to have been numbered using Greek alphanumeric numerals, this being Ζ (7); the known examples are either blank (years 1-3), or bear the numerals 4-16.
