ACHAIA, Aigai. Late 5th-early 4th century BC. Hemidrachm (Silver, 2.74 g 9). Α - Ι - C Forepart of a goat to right. Rev. ΑΙCΑΙΟΝ Head of bearded Dionysos to right, wearing wreath of ivy. BCD Peloponnesos 391 (this coin. Weber 3945 (same dies). Rare. An unusually nice example, toned and of very fine style. Perhaps the finest of all known late hemidrachms from Aigai. Good very fine.

From the Spina Collection, and from the BCD Collection, LHS 96, 8 May 2006, 391 and ex Auctiones 22, 16 June 1992, 317.

Aigai was a city that flourished in the 5th century BC but, for reasons that are now unknown, the site was abandoned c. 370 with its population moving to nearby Aigira and elsewhere. This is a particularly fine example of its coinage.
