PHRYGIA. Hierapolis. Time of Elagabal, 218-222. Diassarion (Bronze, 22 mm, 4.26 g, 6 h), ΛΑΙΡΒΗΝΟC Radiate and draped bust of Apollo Lairbenos to right. Rev. IЄΡAΠOΛЄITΩN NЄΩKOΡΩ/N Apollo standing right, holding lyre in left hand and plectrum in right. BMC 54. SNG von Aulock -. Good very fine.



The sanctuary of Apollo Lairbenos at Hierapolis was excavated in 1960. It was constructed on top of a cavern which, according to Strabo and Pliny, contained venomous fumes and could only be safely entered by the priests of Magna Mater (= Leto).
