Lot 546

KINGS OF LYDIA. Kroisos, circa 560-546 BC. Siglos (Bronze, with contemporary silver plating, 15 mm, 4.96 g), Sardes, 550-546. Confronted foreparts of a lion, on the left, and a bull, on the right. Rev. Two incuse squares of unequal size. Dewing 2428. SNG Kayhan 1024-1026. Some breaks in the plating, otherwise. Good fine.

This is particularly interesting because it is an ancient forgery of the first major issue of silver coins! As such, this is a demonstration of the old adage that if someone makes an object of value, someone else will try and fake it.
