SICILY, Syracuse. Second Democracy. 466-405 BC. Tetradrachm (Silver, 17.33 g 6), c. 466-460. Charioteer driving quadriga walking to right, holding goad in his right hand and the reins in both; above, Nike flying right to crown the horses; in exergue, ketos to right. Rev. ΣΥRΑΚΟΣΙΟΝ Diademed head of Arethusa to right, wearing pendant earring and pearl necklace; around, four dolphins swimming right. BMC 72 (same dies). Boehringer 481 (V256/R345). SNG ANS 149 (same dies). With a lovely and detailed head of Arethusa, her eye nearly in profile. Obverse lightly struck, otherwise, extremely fine.
