Lot 11
Estimate: 15000 CHF
BRUTTIUM, Terina. Circa 400-356 BC. Stater (Silver, 7.72 g 1). ΤΕΡΙΝΑΙΩΝ Head of the nymph Terina to right, wearing pearl necklace and pendant earring, and with her hair rolled up and bound at the top of her head. Rev. Nike seated left on cippus, holding dove alighting on her right hand and resting her left on the seat. Basel 242. HN III 2629. Holloway & Jenkins 84. Jameson 493 (this coin). Regling 81. SNG ANS 852. Of particularly fine style, struck from one of the most beautiful die pairs made at Terina. Attractively toned. Extremely fine.

Ex LHS 95, 25 October 2005, 488, from the collections of R. Jameson, G. Philipsen, Hirsch XV, 28 May 1906, 887, and Sir Hyman Montagu, Sotheby, Wilkinson & Hodge, 23 March 1896, 84.

A wonderful piece, with a pedigree that includes some of the greatest of all collectors of Greek coins! The engraver who produced the dies for this coin was fully aware of the work of his predecessors and contemporaries. The head of Terina refers back to the Arethusas of Syracuse, and the figure of Nike to those on the coinage of Olympia.
