BYZANTINE WEIGHTS, Eastern Mediterranean/Aegean Area. Circa 6th-7th century. Weight of 6-ounkia (Brass, probably once inlaid with silver, 46x11 mm, 164.57 g), a thick discoid commercial weight with two small grooves on the edge (as MAH A 17); a flat, slightly recessed bottom with a small centering hole and a wide, slightly raised rim; and a flat recessed top with an outer raised rim, ounce of 27.42 g. Within a double wreath divided into four quarters by an annulet at 0°, 90°, 180° and 270°, Latin cross above Γ° - S. Rev. Plain. Bendall 112. CPAI 3, 2, 160. MAH 22. With a green patina on the top and a red one on the edges and bottom. Slight surface roughness covering the design, otherwise. Good very fine.
