A very rare ceremonial Miliaresion of Heraclius

Starting Price: 200 CHF
Hammer Price:  550 CHF
Lot 951

Heraclius, 610-641. Miliaresion (Silver, 22mm, 3.67 g 6), Constantinople, 610-613. dN HERACL... Diademed and draped bust of Heraclius to right. Rev. Cross potent on base and two steps between two palm branches. DOC 55. MIB 128. SB. 788. Very rare. Spectacularly double- and flat-struck, otherwise, very fine.

Ceremonial denominations like this were used as donatives; though the bad quality of the strike goes to show that its recipient would have been far more interested in its metal value than its beauty! However, the fact that coins like this are almost invariably found well worn indicates that they were used over a long period of time.
