Livio Odescalchi, Duke of Bracciano, was the nephew of Pope Innocent XI and a great collector of Roman antiquities. He became Duke of Bracciano, a town some 30 km northwest of Rome, when he bought it in 1696 from the bankrupt Orsinis, the original owner and used it to house his collection, which he had, in turn, acquired from Queen Christina of Sweden.
