France. Louis XIV. 1643-1715. Medal (Silver, 60mm, 121 g 12), on the capture of Cambrai, by J. Roettiers (1631-1703), 1677. LVDOVICVS.MAGNVS.REX.CHRISTIANISS. Bare headed, draped and cuirassed bust of Louis XIV to right, wearing aegis and with his armor decorated with fleurs-de-lis; below, monogram of JR. Rev. METVS FINIVM SVBLATVS / CAMERACO CAPTA / .M.DC.LXXVII. (= the frontiers stabilized by the capture of Cambrai, 1677) Farmer ploughing to left, in field before the walls of Cambrai. Cf. van Loon III, 217 (but by Mollart). Very rare. Toned and most attractive. Good extremely fine.


The obverse of this medal was struck from the same die as that used for the medal of 1677, lot 70, above.
