An apparently unpublished Diassarion of Plautilla from Sikyon

Starting Price: 100 CHF
Hammer Price:  950 CHF
Lot 678

Sikyonia, Sikyon. Plautilla, wife of Caracalla, 203-205. Diassarion (Bronze, 22mm, 4.73 g 3). ΦΟΥΛΒΙΑ ΠΛ[ΑΥΤ]ΙΛΛ[Α] Draped bust of Plautilla to right with cornucopia at her far shoulder. Rev. CΙ[ΚΥΩ]ΝΙ[ΩΝ] Bridled horse moving left, with saddle-cloth on which is a draped female bust to left. BCD -. BMC -. NCP-. An interesting piece, and apparently unpublished. Nearly very fine.

This coin has a particularly unusual reverse type: a female bust apparently riding a walking horse. Thanks to another unpublished Sikyonian coin of Plautilla, struck from the same obverse die, but with a closely related reverse showing a horse walking to right, but ‘rode’ by a bearded male head (CNG E-auction 254, 20 April 2011, 190), we can suggest that the coins taken together represent a local festival in honor of Zeus and Hera.
