Starting Price: 200 CHF
Hammer Price:  400 CHF
Lot 606

Cilicia, Mopsos. Antoninus Pius, 138-161. Tetradrachm (Silver, 26mm, 14.29 g 5), c. 138-early 140s. ΑΥΤ ΚΑΙC Τ ΑΙΛ ΑΔΡ ΑΝΤWΝΕΙΝΟC CΕΒ ΕΥ ΠΠ Bare-headed, draped and cuirassed bust of Antoninus Pius to right. Rev. ΑΔΡΙΑΝWΝ ΜΟΨΕΑΤWΝ Eagle with spread wings standing facing, head turned to right; between legs, flaming altar. Prieur 728. SNG Paris 1969. Very rare. With a very attractive, idiosyncratic portrait of early type. Many light cleaning scratches, otherwise, very fine.

The bare-headed portrait on this coin is quite similar to that on the early denarii of Pius, which were struck during his short period as Caesar (February-September 138). The other coins of Pius from Mopsos bear a portrait that is much closer to that of his later years.
