GERMANY. Augsburg. 1527. Medal (Bronze, 67 mm, 87.00 g, 6 h), on Matthäus Schwartz (1497-1574), Augsburg, by Friedrich Hagenauer (fl. 1525-1544). MATHEVS SCHWARTZ VINDE ETATIS ANNO XXX Bust of Schwartz to left, wearing wide-brimmed hat and full robes; to left and right, M.D. - XXVII.; to left, artist’s monogram. Rev. FIAT VOLVNTAS TVA Shield of arms with helmet and crest. Habich 496 (but 70 mm). An old cast with an attractive brown patina. Good very fine.

Matthäus Schwartz, was an Augsburg merchant who was also the Fugger family’s accountant, which means he must have had a great deal of responsibility; he certainly looks proud of himself here. The artist responsible for this medal, Friedrich Hagenauer, was born in Strasbourg at some point between 1490 and 1500, and became one of the great German Renaissance medalists. He worked all over southern Germany but finally ended up in Cologne where he remained until his death.
