A rare Drachm of Antiochos IX

Starting Price: 75 CHF
Hammer Price:  170 CHF
Lot 480

SELEUKID KINGS of SYRIA. Antiochos IX Eusebes Philopator (Kyzikenos), 114/3-95 BC. Drachm (Silver, 17mm, 3.67 g 12), First reign, circa 114/3-112, Tarsos. Diademed head of Antiochos IV to right. Rev. BAΣIΛEΩΣ / ANTIOXOY / ΦIΛOΠATOPOΣ Sandan standing right on back of horned, winged animal standing right; two monograms to outer left. SC 2351. Rare. Porous and with minor flan crack, otherwise, very fine.

During the reign of Antiochos IX, the mint of Tarsos replaced the Seleukid types of Apollo or Nike with the local deity Sandan as the reverse type for its coins: No doubt this was a reflexion of the shrinking power of the Seleukid state in a period of constant civil wars.
