A very rare and particularly interesting Dichalkon of Sames II

Starting Price: 450 CHF
Hammer Price:  1700 CHF
Lot 454

COMMAGENE. Sames II Theosebes Dikaios, c. 130-109 BC. Dichalkon (Bronze, 17mm, 5.72 g 12), Samosata (?). Radiate head of Sames II to right. Rev. ΒΑΣΙΛΕΩΣ / ΣΑΜΟΥ // ΘΕΟΣΕΒΟΥΣ / ΚΑΙ ΔΙΚΑΙΟΥ Nike walking to left, holding wreath; in exergue, ΓΛ. HN p. 774 (but misattributed). Very rare and particularly interesting. Very fine.

Purchased from a lot of unidentified “junk” at a German coin show 12 years ago, and unidentified until now!.

The coins of the early rulers of Commagene are remarkably rare: this king, who was of Armenian and Pontic descent, founded the great fortress at Samosata (now under water thanks to a modern dam). The coin is clearly copied from the Seleukid issues of Antiochos VI
