overview

An extremely fine Obol from an uncertain Cilician mint

Starting Price: 200 CHF
Hammer Price:  280 CHF
Lot 440

CILICIA. Uncertain. 4th Century BC. Obol (Silver, 12 mm, 0.79 g, 1 h). Baaltars seated to left, holding grain ears, grape and scepter. Rev. Forepart of wolf to left, crescent above. SNG Paris -. Weber 7637. A particularly well centered specimen, very rare with the wolf to left. Extremely fine.

Exactly where these coins were issued is unclear, although they have been attributed to Tarsos in the past. The type is reminiscent of Cilician satrapal coinage; however, the thinness of the flan and the general fabric argues for a later date.
