overview

An extremely rare and curious incertum from Lycia (?)

Starting Price: 200 CHF
Hammer Price:  650 CHF
Lot 380

Uncertain Greek, Lycia (?). Circa 500 BC. Obol (Silver, 9mm, 1.09 g). Head of a boar with a huge eye to left. Rev. Incuse square divided into eight compartments. Apparently unknown and unpublished. Cf. Rosen 682 (stater and Peus 407, 2012l 671-673 (stater and thirds). Boldly struck bizarre. Extremely fine.

From a German collection formed before 2005.

Yet another curious incertum. It was initially thought to be northern Greek, but its closest parallels are staters and thirds from an uncertain early mint in Lycia.
