A fascinating Drachm from Larissa with magistrate’s initials

Starting Price: 200 CHF
Hammer Price:  460 CHF
Lot 174

THESSALY, Larissa. Circa 460-440 BC. Drachm (Silver, 18mm, 5.98 g 12). Thessalos, with petasos and cloak over his shoulders, striding left, holding a rushing bull with a band around its horns; to left, branch; on ground line below, plant; in exergue, ΤΟ (barely visible). Rev. ΛΑ / ΡΙΣΑ (partially retrograde) Bridled horse, with dangling rein, galloping right; all within incuse square. BCD II 366.1 (same dies). Basically sharp, well-struck and attractive. Slightly rough surfaces, otherwise, about extremely fine.

From a European collection, formed before 2005.

What is interesting about this coin is how faint the magistrate’s initials on the obverse appear to be. Either there was an attempt at erasure or they were only engraved very lightly in the die.
